Comparison By Division

Comparison By Division:

In our daily life when ever we have to make comparisons we use various technique, one such technique is Comparison By Division.

For example we have to compare our performance in two subjects i.e. maths and english. for this we will take into consideration the marks obtained in these subjects. Let us say that marks in maths are 35 and marks in english are 25., then we can say that I have obtained more marks in maths than english ,

We can compare the marks by dividing the marks.

frac{Marks;in;maths}{Marks;in;english}=frac{35}{25}=frac{7}{5}

or we can say that marks in maths are 7/5 times the marks in english.

Thus we have compared the marks of maths and english by performing division between them. Such a comparison is known as the Comparison By Division.

Illustration: David and Sandy are two friends having heights as 150 cm and 135 cm respectively. Compare their heights.

Solution:  On comparing the heights we see that height of David is more than the height of Sandy. On dividing the heights we get

frac{Height;of;David}{Height;of;Sandy}=frac{150}{135}=frac{10}{9}

Hence height of David is 10/9 times the height of Sandy.
